TANO Around Texas in November/December
NRMCManaging the Risk of Volunteer Misconduct
Wednesday, November 4 at 2 p.m. (eastern) 1:00pm (central)
Let's face it, from time to time, even the most promising, mission-driven volunteers make judgment errors or fail to meet performance expectations. The positive contributions of volunteers are incalculable in many nonprofits, yet along with that benefit comes the need to attend to the risks arising from misconduct or poor performance. During this webinar we'll explore practical strategies that increase the opportunity for your volunteers to succeed. We'll also look at examples of volunteer misconduct and outline steps that will help you and your organization get back on track with minimal damage. Register at http://nonprofitrisk.org/training/webinars/webinars.shtml

NTEN LogoFREE Fundraising with Social Media: Introduction
Wednesday, November 11 at 2:00pm (central)
Presented by: Holly Ross, Executive Director, NTEN
You've heard the stories.  Heck, maybe you even tried it yourself.  It seems that everyone knows someone who's used social media to raise money for their cause, but it's never us, or the people WE know!  Truth is, raising money with social media isn't very different than raising money any other way.  But it will require that we learn some new skills and approach our work in a different way.  Designed for staff who are beginners to social media, this webinar will outline what social media means for fundraisers, give case studies, and set you up to think about your first campaigns. This event is FREE and exclusively for the TANO community. Register at http://nten.org/TANO/events (note: if you've never participated in NTEN events before, you'll be asked to create a log-in.  After creating a log-in, return to the above link to sign up for the event)

Volunteerism. While the conference title has changed to include the word "nonprofit," they still focus heavily on the importance of volunteerism at their conference. They offer seminars for leaders of all levels, including some focused specifically on supporting volunteer leaders and their work.

Impact: Where the Rubber Meets the Road. Their 2009 conference will focus on how to create social impact in our communities, improving the lives of those served by nonprofits.

A Fresh Start. It's hard to get out of the office for a few days. But by stepping back for a little while, you can view your work, your programs, your organization and the decisions you have to make from a fresh new perspective.

Governor's Volunteer Awards. This year, the 2009 Governor's Volunteer Awards will be presented at the Governor's Nonprofit Leadership Conference. These awards honor some of Texas' most dedicated volunteers--including individuals, organizations, corporations and public entities--whose community service embodies the power of volunteerism and civic engagement.

Exhibit Hall. The conference's Exhibit Hall is a great way to learn about capacity building resources that are available to your organization.

A New World for Nonprofits. OneStar recognizes the new challenges nonprofits are facing due to the current economy. They've selected seminars and speakers to help us all navigate these trying times.Review a list of seminars at: http://www.onestarfoundation.org/page/gnlc-seminars.

Social Innovation. Every year, the conference provides invaluable training to organizations and businesses. This year, they will highlight the concept and practice of social innovation. In addition, they will be announcing the recipients of the Texas Social Innovation Initiative. There is still time to apply for this opportunity!  For more details, so to http://www.onestarfoundation.org/page/tsi.

Return on Investment. The cost of your conference ticket is money well spent on developing valuable skills to help you both fundraise and work more effectively with the funds your organization has.

Learn from the Best. The conference will feature internationally-recognized social entrepreneurs Robert Egger of DC Central Kitchen and Andrew Wolk of Root Cause, as well as an innovative roster of seminar speakers.  Review speaker bios at: http://www.onestarfoundation.org/page/gnlc-speakers

Strength in Numbers. GNLC is the state's largest nonprofit conference, gathering volunteer managers, nonprofit professionals, state agencies and faith-based and community organizations from across Texas. Our peers can provide valuable support and idea generation. To further this, OneStar has added several new opportunities to network with peers while at the conference.

Governance Matters
Strengthening the governance practices at your nonprofit requires more than a checklist or handbook touting "do's" and "don'ts." Leaders who want to inspire good governance must take the time necessary to look beneath the surface of often complex governance issues and commit to remedying issues that stand in the way of the board discharging its legal duties and providing exemplary leadership.
